<p>1803 entdeckten <a href="Wilhelm_Hisinger" class="mw-redirect" title="Wilhelm Hisinger">Wilhelm Hisinger</a> und <a href="J%C3%B6ns_Jakob_Berzelius" title="Jöns Jakob Berzelius">Jöns Jakob Berzelius</a> in einem <i>tungsten</i> („schwerer Stein“) genannten Mineral aus Bastnäs in <a href="Schweden" title="Schweden">Schweden</a> das <a href="Cer" title="Cer">Cer</a> und nannten das Mineral <a href="Cerit" title="Cerit">Cerit</a>.<sup id="cite_ref-10" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-10"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>10<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> <a href="Carl_Gustav_Mosander" title="Carl Gustav Mosander">Carl Gustav Mosander</a> untersuchte ab 1825 Cerit und verschiedene Cerverbindungen genauer. Er vermutet bald, dass es sich um ein Gemisch verschiedener Elemente handeln müsse, konnte sie aber zunächst nicht trennen. 1838 gelang es ihm schließlich, zwei Elemente dadurch zu trennen, indem er zunächst das gemischte Nitrat durch Erhitzen zum Oxid umwandelte. Anschließend ließ er dieses mit sehr verdünnter <a href="Salpeters%C3%A4ure" title="Salpetersäure">Salpetersäure</a> reagieren. Dabei blieb das Ceroxid unlöslich zurück, während das Oxid des zweiten Elements sich löste. Da es sich sozusagen im Cer „versteckt“ hatte, nannte Mosander das neue Element nach einem Vorschlag von Berzelius nach dem Altgriechischen λανθάνειν [lanthanein] („verborgen sein“) <i>Lant(h)an</i>. Er konnte auch metallisches Lanthan in Form eines grauen Pulvers durch Reaktion von <a href="Lanthanchlorid" title="Lanthanchlorid">Lanthanchlorid</a> mit <a href="Kalium" title="Kalium">Kalium</a> gewinnen.<sup id="cite_ref-11" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-11"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>11<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup><sup id="cite_ref-Tansjö_12-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Tansjö-12"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>12<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
</p><p>Bei der weiteren Untersuchung von Lanthanverbindungen stellte Mosander fest, dass auch dieses eine Mischung verschiedener Elemente ist. Durch die unterschiedliche Löslichkeit der Sulfate konnte er 1840 Lanthan von einem weiteren Element trennen, das er <i><a href="Didym" title="Didym">Didym</a></i> (vom griechischen δίδυμος, ‚Zwilling‘) nannte.<sup id="cite_ref-13" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-13"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>13<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Auch das Didym stellte sich schließlich als Mischung der Elemente <a href="Neodym" title="Neodym">Neodym</a> und <a href="Praseodym" title="Praseodym">Praseodym</a> heraus.<sup id="cite_ref-14" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-14"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>14<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup><sup id="cite_ref-Tansjö_12-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Tansjö-12"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>12<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
</p><p>Reines metallisches Lanthan wurde 1923 durch <a href="Elektrolyse" title="Elektrolyse">elektrolytische</a> <a href="Reduktion_(Chemie)" title="Reduktion (Chemie)">Reduktion</a> von Lanthanchlorid gewonnen.<sup id="cite_ref-15" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-15"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>15<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup><sup id="cite_ref-16" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-16"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>16<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>

<div class="mw-heading mw-heading2"><h2 id="Vorkommen">Vorkommen</h2></div>
<p>Lanthan ist auf der Erde ein zwar insgesamt seltenes, mit einem Gehalt von 39 <a href="Parts_per_million" title="Parts per million">ppm</a> in der <a href="Kontinentale_Erdkruste" title="Kontinentale Erdkruste">kontinentalen Erdkruste</a> verbreitet vorkommendes Element. Es ist nach Cer und Neodym das dritthäufigste Seltenerdmetall.<sup id="cite_ref-CRC_17-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-CRC-17"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>17<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Wie die anderen Lanthanoide ist Lanthan ein <a href="Goldschmidt-Klassifikation" title="Goldschmidt-Klassifikation">lithophiles</a> Element, das vorwiegend in der <a href="Lithosph%C3%A4re" title="Lithosphäre">Lithosphäre</a> der Erde zu finden ist. Geochemisch wirkt Lanthan als ein <a href="Inkompatibles_Element" title="Inkompatibles Element">inkompatibles Element</a>, das sich beim teilweisen Schmelzen und der <a href="Fraktionierte_Kristallisation_(Petrologie)" title="Fraktionierte Kristallisation (Petrologie)">fraktionierten Kristallisation</a> von <a href="Magma" title="Magma">Magma</a> bevorzugt in der Schmelze anreichert. Es ist daher stärker in der kontinentalen Erdkruste im Vergleich zum <a href="Erdmantel" title="Erdmantel">Erdmantel</a> konzentriert.<sup id="cite_ref-EncyclGeochem_18-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-EncyclGeochem-18"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>18<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
</p><p>Lanthan ist vorwiegend Bestandteil von Mineralen der leichten Seltenen Erden (LREE, Ceriterden), die verschiedene <a href="Mischkristallreihe" class="mw-redirect" title="Mischkristallreihe">Mischkristallreihen</a> bilden. Die wichtigsten sind dabei <a href="Bastn%C3%A4sit" title="Bastnäsit">Bastnäsit</a> (Ce,La,Nd,Y)[(F,OH)|CO<sub>3</sub>] und <a href="Monazit" title="Monazit">Monazit</a> (Ce,La,Nd,Sm)(PO<sub>4</sub>). Bastnäsit kann bis zu 38 %, Monazit bis zu 25 % Lanthan enthalten. Auch Minerale wie <a href="Fergusonit" title="Fergusonit">Fergusonit</a>, <a href="Loparit" title="Loparit">Loparit</a> oder <a href="Gadolinit" title="Gadolinit">Gadolinit</a> enthalten Lanthan, jedoch in geringeren Mengen. Bastnäsit und Monazit sind auch die Erze, die überwiegend als Rohstoff für die Gewinnung von Lanthan und seinen Verbindungen dienen.<sup id="cite_ref-19" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-19"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>19<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
</p><p>In einigen Fällen wurden auch Minerale verschiedener Mischkristallreihen gefunden, in denen Lanthan das dominierende Lanthanoid ist. So sind beispielsweise <a href="Monazit-(La)" class="mw-redirect" title="Monazit-(La)">Monazit-(La)</a>, <a href="Bastn%C3%A4sit-(La)" class="mw-redirect" title="Bastnäsit-(La)">Bastnäsit-(La)</a>, Agardit-(La), <a href="Davidit-(La)" class="mw-redirect" title="Davidit-(La)">Davidit-(La)</a>, <a href="Allanit-(La)" class="mw-redirect" title="Allanit-(La)">Allanit-(La)</a> und <a href="Rhabdophan-(La)" class="mw-redirect" title="Rhabdophan-(La)">Rhabdophan-(La)</a> bekannt. Insgesamt wurden 58 verschiedene Lanthan-Minerale, insbesondere Silikate und Carbonate gefunden und von der <a href="International_Mineralogical_Association" title="International Mineralogical Association">International Mineralogical Association</a> anerkannt (Stand 2025). Natürlich vorkommendes <a href="Gediegen" title="Gediegen">gediegenes</a> Lanthan ist dagegen unbekannt.<sup id="cite_ref-20" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-20"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>20<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
</p><p>Zu den Orten mit den größten und wichtigsten Vorkommen an Ceriterden zählen <a href="Bayan_Obo" title="Bayan Obo">Bayan Obo</a> in der <a href="Volksrepublik_China" title="Volksrepublik China">Volksrepublik China</a>, <a href="Arax%C3%A1" title="Araxá">Araxá</a> in <a href="Brasilien" title="Brasilien">Brasilien</a>, Amba Dongar in <a href="Indien" title="Indien">Indien</a>, <a href="Mount_Weld" title="Mount Weld">Mount Weld</a> in <a href="Australien" title="Australien">Australien</a>, <a href="Kuannersuit" title="Kuannersuit">Kuannersuit</a> auf <a href="Gr%C3%B6nland" title="Grönland">Grönland</a>, <a href="Lowosero" title="Lowosero">Lowosero</a> in <a href="Russland" title="Russland">Russland</a> sowie die Bear Lodge Mountains in <a href="Wyoming" title="Wyoming">Wyoming</a> und <a href="Mountain_Pass" title="Mountain Pass">Mountain Pass</a> in <a href="Kalifornien" title="Kalifornien">Kalifornien</a>, <a href="Vereinigte_Staaten" title="Vereinigte Staaten">Vereinigte Staaten</a>.<sup id="cite_ref-21" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-21"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>21<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Insbesondere in Bayan Obo befinden sich große Mengen Lanthan. Die Gesamtreserven an Seltenerdelementen in Bayan Obo werden auf 57,1 Millionen Tonnen oder etwa 42 % der Reserven auf der ganzen Welt geschätzt. Davon ist etwa die Hälfte Cer, und 27 % Lanthan, dazu 15 % Neodym und geringere Anteile der anderen Seltenen Erden.<sup id="cite_ref-22" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-22"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>22<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
</p><p>Der Gehalt an Lanthan im <a href="Meerwasser" title="Meerwasser">Meerwasser</a> ist mit 4,2 <a href="Parts_per_trillion" title="Parts per trillion">ppt</a> gering, das Element besitzt jedoch nach Yttrium die höchste Konzentration aller Seltenen Erden in den Ozeanen.<sup id="cite_ref-23" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-23"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>23<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
</p>

<p>Nach einer aufwendigen Abtrennung der anderen Lanthanbegleiter wird das <a href="Oxide" title="Oxide">Oxid</a> mit <a href="Fluorwasserstoff" title="Fluorwasserstoff">Fluorwasserstoff</a> zum <a href="Lanthanfluorid" title="Lanthanfluorid">Lanthanfluorid</a> umgesetzt. Anschließend wird dieses mit <a href="Calcium" title="Calcium">Calcium</a> unter Bildung von <a href="Calciumfluorid" title="Calciumfluorid">Calciumfluorid</a> zum Lanthan <a href="Reduktion_(Chemie)" title="Reduktion (Chemie)">reduziert</a>. Die Abtrennung verbleibender Calciumreste und Verunreinigungen erfolgt in einer zusätzlichen Umschmelzung im <a href="Vakuum" title="Vakuum">Vakuum</a>.

Als <a href="Gusseisen" title="Gusseisen">Gusseisenzusatz</a> unterstützt es die Bildung von <a href="Kugelgraphit" title="Kugelgraphit">Kugelgraphit</a>, als <a href="Legierung" title="Legierung">Legierungszusatz</a> bewirkt es eine Verbesserung der <a href="Oxidation" title="Oxidation">Oxidationsbeständigkeit</a>. Lanthanbeimengungen reduzieren die Härte und Temperaturempfindlichkeit von <a href="Molybd%C3%A4n" title="Molybdän">Molybdän</a>.
</p><p>Hochwertige <a href="Kathode" title="Kathode">Kathoden</a> zur Erzeugung von freien <a href="Elektron" title="Elektron">Elektronen</a> bestehen aus <a href="Lanthanhexaborid" title="Lanthanhexaborid">Lanthanhexaborid</a> als Ersatz für <a href="Wolfram" title="Wolfram">Wolframdraht</a>. Hochreines <a href="Lanthanoxid" title="Lanthanoxid">Lanthanoxid</a> wird in der <a href="Glasindustrie" title="Glasindustrie">Glasindustrie</a> zur Herstellung hochwertiger Gläser mit hohem <a href="Brechungsindex" title="Brechungsindex">Brechungsindex</a> für die <a href="Optik" title="Optik">Optik</a> genutzt, z. In Verbindung mit Cobalt, <a href="Eisen" title="Eisen">Eisen</a>, <a href="Mangan" title="Mangan">Mangan</a>, <a href="Strontium" title="Strontium">Strontium</a> u. a. dient es als Kathode für Hochtemperatur-<a href="Brennstoffzelle" title="Brennstoffzelle">Brennstoffzellen</a> (<a href="SOFC" class="mw-redirect" title="SOFC">SOFC</a>). „Verunreinigtes“ Lanthan-<a href="Nickel" title="Nickel">Nickel</a> (LaNi<sub>5</sub>) findet als Wasserstoffspeicher in <a href="Nickel-Metallhydrid-Akkumulator" title="Nickel-Metallhydrid-Akkumulator">Nickel-Metallhydrid-Akkumulatoren</a> Verwendung. Als Zusatz kommt es in Kohlelichtbogenlampen zur Studiobeleuchtung und in Filmvorführanlagen vor.

Diese Metalllegierung mit <a href="Titan_(Element)" title="Titan (Element)">Titan</a> soll für Werkzeuge und Apparate für chirurgische Eingriffe besonders gut geeignet sein, da die Allergie-Neigung bei Verwendung derartiger Metalllegierung mit Titan im Verhältnis zu anderen Legierungen gering sein soll.
